On 7.11.2024, a session on "IPR Awareness for Engineering Students" was organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the Department of Information Technology. The session was handled by Mr. F. Richard singh samuel, Assistant Professor, Department of IT, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli, from 1.20 PM to 3.00 PM. A total of 59 students and two faculties participated. This event was coordinated by Mr. F. Richard Singh Samuel, AP/IT.
The event, organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell, aimed to educate and raise awareness among engineering students about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights and their relevance in the modern world, especially in the context of engineering and innovation. The guest speaker began the session by introducing the basic concepts of IPR and its significance in today’s knowledge-driven economy. He emphasized how IPR plays a crucial role in protecting creative ideas, technological innovations, and intellectual assets, especially for students and professionals in engineering fields. He also explained the various types of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, highlighting how each can be used to safeguard intellectual output.
To make the concept of IPR more relatable, the speaker presented the real-world examples of successful engineers and entrepreneurs who had effectively used IPR to protect their inventions. He shared stories of tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, illustrating how these companies have built their success by leveraging patents and other intellectual property protections. He also pointed out the importance of safeguarding innovations through registering the patents even during the ideation stage of a project.A significant portion of the session was dedicated to discussing the legal and ethical aspects of IPR. He also explained the process of patent filing, copyright registration, and trademark registration.
The session was an interactive one wherein the students clarified their doubts and more insight about intellectual property rights and its importance to safeguard the rights of the innovators.
